The Rhythm of the Journey
Arrival at Indira Gandhi International Airport. New Delhi & overnight stay at the close by hotel
Morning Fly to Kasi 1.5 hours
First Ganga Sit Settle in near the ghats.
Evening: Gaṅgā āratī at Daśāśvamedh Ghāt — full ceremonial version, worth seeing once in its complete form even amid crowds
Very early: sunrise boat ride along the ghats (the single most important sādhana-paced experience here — silence, water, the burning ghats seen from a respectful distance)
Kāśī Viśvanāth Mandir darshan (after boat, before peak crowd)
Afternoon rest
Evening: Assi Ghāt — quieter, more residential end of the ghat line, good for unhurried sitting
Morning: walk past Manikarnikā Ghāt with sensitivity and without spectacleseeking — a teaching moment on death as ordinary rather than distant
Afternoon: day trip to Sarnath (~30 min) — where the Buddha gave his first teaching; a deliberate widening of the frame from bhakti alone to the fuller field of Indian contemplative tradition
Evening: free/rest
Tulsī Mānas Mandir — marble temple with the Rāmcaritmānas inscribed on its walls, a fitting closure of the Rāma thread carried from Ayodhya
Ramnagar Fort across the river — quieter, historical, good for an afternoon of looser exploration
Evening: closing kirtan and satsang — naming the full arc (līlā → dharma → mokṣa), personal sharing from students
Travel to Ayodhya by car 4 -5 hours and night stay
Saryu River Arrive by afternoon, settle in.
Evening: Saryu Ghāt āratī - quieter and less commercialized than Varanasi’s, worth experiencing on its own terms rather than as a rehearsal for Kāśī’s
Early morning: Rām Janmabhūmi Mandir darshan (security queues can be long even outside festival season — plan for this, arrive very early)
Hanumān Garhī — the steep climb to Hanumān’s shrine, said to guard the birthplace
Afternoon rest
Evening: Kanak Bhawan — Rāma and Sītā’s palace-temple, gentler pace, good for teaching on the dharmic ideal of householder life
Nāgeśvaranāth Temple (Śiva, said installed by Kuśa, Rāma’s son - a quiet thread connecting this leg forward to Kāśī)
Travel to Virindavan: by car 7-8 hours
Banke Bihari & Nidhivan
Early: Banke Bihari darshan (arrive before the mid-morning crowd)
Mid-morning: walk to Nidhivan — the sacred grove, and its stillness by day
Afternoon rest
Evening: Keśī Ghāt āratī on the Yamunā
Full-day excursion (~1 hr drive) to Govardhan Hill
Short parikramā segment – can be done by walk (5 km or 9 km or 21km) or by e-rickshaw
Rādhā Kuṇḍa and Śyāma Kuṇḍa — sitting practice at the kuṇḍas
Return by evening; rest
Rādhā Raman Mandir Rādhā Dāmodar, Śyāmā Śyām — smaller, quieter temples where the group can actually sit rather than only stand in queue
Afternoon: optional visit to Prem Mandir (marble, modern, visually stunning — good for those who want spectacle; entirely optional for those who prefer the older, plainer sites)
Evening: closing kirtan for the Vrindavan leg — a chance to name what’s arisen before moving on
Travel to New Delhi — conclude the pilgrimage journey and prepare for departure.
Practical & Entry Information
Practical Notes
-
Internal transport: Delhi ⇄ Kasi by Air; Kasi ⇄ Ayodhya by road; Ayodhya ⇄ Vrindavan by road.
-
Lodging style: given a mixed group, simple clean guesthouses or ashram-adjacent stays (not necessarily austere ashram dormitories) will serve better than luxury hotels — enough comfort that newer travelers aren’t destabilized, enough simplicity that the pilgrimage doesn’t feel like tourism.
-
Physical pacing: Govardhan and Hanumān Garhī are the two days with real physical demand (walking, stairs, heat). Everything else is manageable for less mobile students if queue-times are managed by early arrival.
-
Group size for darshan lines: temple security queues (especially Rām Janmabhūmi) move slowly for groups over 15; if your cohort is larger, consider splitting into two queue groups.
-
Teaching rhythm: the three evening satsangs I’ve marked (end of Vrindavan, mid-Ayodhya, end of Kāśī) are natural anchor points if you want to teach the līlā–dharma–mokṣa arc explicitly rather than letting it work silently
AccessNotes: Non-Hindu /ForeignEntry
-
No restrictions for Non-Hindu/Foreigners for Temples in Kasi, Ayodhya and Virindavan
-
Always carry original passport for security checks.
-
Book through the official process in advance rather than arriving without one
-
Engage a local pandit or fixer with standing relationships at the temple — this appears to matter more than any written rule
- Dress the group in full traditional attire (dhoti-kurta / sari/shirt-full pant), not simply “modest Western clothing” — this measurably reduces friction
